There are 3 main types of harness; sit, chest and full body. Sit harnesses are the most common, lightweight, most comfortable and allow the greatest range of movement. Chest harnesses offer a bit more support and attachment points when worn with a sit harness and full body harnesses are a combination of them both, usually fixed together, and are great for children!
When buying a harness key things to look out for are weight, padding, no. of gear loops, fixed or adjustable legs. A beginner will be more suited to a heavier, but more comfortably padded harness, whereas an advanced climber looking for maximum performance will go for a lighter and less padded harness.
