The Black Diamond Avalung is possibly one of the most exciting developments in avalanche safety. When buried, the most likely cause of death is suffocation due to the amount of oxygen that is stored in the snow pack, which is typically about 15 minutes worth. The Avalung increases the amount of oxygen around you to about 58 minutes by drawing in oxygen that is around your body, not your mouth. Excess Co2 is then dispersed out around your back, stopping contamination and freezing of the snow pack.
The Avalung consisted of a sling which is worn outside of your jacket, and a mouthpiece which tucks away into the sling, but is easily accessible in the event of an avalanche.
The Avalung has been proven to save lives by increasing the amount of rescue time your search party has and is trusted by guides, mountaineers and back country enthusiasts around the world.

1. The AvaLung II breathing apparatus is designed to be used only in conjunction with an AvaLung/Black Diamond labeled harness.
2. ALWAYs wear your AvaLung II on the outside of all garments. never wear a jacket or other garment over the
AvaLung II harness. In order for the AvaLung II to function properly, it must be in direct contact with the snow pack.
3. A backpack may be worn over the AvaLung II harness. note: Make sure the exhalation tube is not
pinched by your specific pack – otherwise you should use a different one.
4. ALWAYs buckle the AvaLung II harness. Securely tighten the straps before entering avalanche-prone terrain.
5. Self-test the AvaLung II by breathing through the mouthpiece before each use and each run to ensure the airway is not blocked or restricted. Check your mouthpiece and AvaLung II frequently, especially after each run or fall; it must be clear of snow, ice and debris.
6. Always have your mouthpiece in the ready position or securely in your mouth when in terrain where avalanches may occur and when in deep or unstable snow conditions.
