Outerwear Sizing Tips

Snowboard & Ski Jacket Sizes
When choosing snowboard jackets or ski jackets, you do NOT need to make any extra allowance for the different mid layers you may wear underneath or for the need for freedom of movement; the manufacturers have already done this. So, if you are 36" chest, choose a jacket where the manufacturer quotes a 36" chest.

Snowboard & Ski Pants Sizes
If you are going to wear impact shorts, make sure you pick a pair of snowboard pants and not ski pants. This is because snowboard pants tend to have a looser fit/styling and can usually accommodate a pair of impact shorts underneath. Leg length is not so critical on ski trousers or snowboard trousers as it is on regular street clothing. The fashion is to have your pants bunched up on your snowboard boots - which is fine for shorter people. For taller people, this may not be possible. For the very tall, unfortunately most manufacturers do not produce leg lengths much beyond 33" but, because snowboarding boots and ski boots come 6 inches or so up your leg, this should not be a significant problem. We quote the leg length on all the skiing and snowboarding pants listed on our website.

Ski salopettes are a very practical alternative to skiing trousers because, with their bib and braces arrangement, they have a much higher waist and are therefore able to stop the snow going down your trousers when you fall over in powder. Again, manufacturers already make an allowance for the fact that salopettes get worn over your mid layer clothing; they tend to be made with 2 inch bigger waist measurements because of this. Some salopettes have removable bibs/braces, so you can wear them like normal ski pants BUT if you now wear them with your mid layer clothes not tucked in, you may find them a little on the large side.

We recommend going for skiing and snowboarding trousers with adjustable waists and belt loops. You never know what size you are going to be from one season to the next! Most manufacturers use clever Velcro based systems. Elasticated waists are ideal for freedom of movement but you may get arrested by the fashion police if the elastic is anywhere other than out of site at the back of the waist band!
