Helmets are measured in centimetres. The size quoted is the MAXIMUM head size each helmet will fit. For advice on how to measure your head size, please visit our Advice Centre, or look at the bottom of each helmet's product description.
Different manufacturers define their helmet sizes differently! So, if you select 'medium' helmets, some will be as small as 55cm whilst others could be as big as 59cm! Not all 'medium' helmets are the same size! We therefore recommend using our 'Actual Size' filter instead.
These helmets have a size adjustment dial at the back. This is good to get a tailored fit and to feel more secure in the helmet. It's also good for kids who are still growing and for those who sometimes wear a beanie under their lid.
These helmets come with a selection of velcro backed foam pads which you can insert behind the lining of your helmet to customise the fit. It can be a bit fiddly to get right at first but once the pads are in the correct place you should never need to move them again.
Integrated audio systems, so you can listen to music on the move. Audio helmets are better than using ear buds because they allow you to hear what is going on around you - as well as your music!
Here we list all 'normal' or 'traditional' helmet styles, including those without a peak, those which are not full cut and those which are not full face.
A full cut helmet not only protects the head but the hard outer shell also covers the ears - thereby affording more protection than some other helmet styles. Full cut helmets are favoured by racers (just look at ski Sunday!) and parents of young children. Cool dudes and the style conscious tend to avoid them.
Vents
Venting in helmets can be quite important to control body temperature and to keep a cool head while riding.
The vents on these helmets can be opened and closed whilst you are riding using a variety of slider bars or rotating dials. This means you can adjust the air flow whilst your helmet is on your head - nice and convenient!
These helmets have vent covers or plugs which can be used to open or close some or all of the vents in your helmet. You can, however, only open or close the vents when the helmet is not on your head.
No air vents means your head will be warm whilst riding. If you select a Bern helmet with Brock Foam, venting is less important because the Brock Foam is hollow, allowing the free movement of air around your head.
Standard material used on most sports helmets. EPS stands for Expanded Polystyrene - it's very light weight and incredibly tough, much harder than the stuff your washing machine comes packed in! The down side is that it is quite bulky and single impact. If you drop or bash your helmet hard, you should replace it. This explains why you should never rent a helmet - you never know who has already bashed it!
In-Mould technology (or In-Mold if you are American or zip mold if you are looking at a Bern lid) is an expensive production technique where the helmet's outer shell is simulateneously moulded to the EPS core at the time the core is constructed. The end result is an ultra light weight helmet, with a far thinner profile than a regular EPS lid. It also results in a much tougher and safer helmet. Like all EPS helmets, they are single impact and should be discarded if dropped or bashed.
Brock Foam is unique to Bern, high tech, super comfortable, low profile 'sink-fit', breathable (so nice and cool) and multi-impact. Bash the helmet time and time again and, so long as the shell is not cracked, you can keep on wearing it! Brock Foam helmets are not certified for snow sports use so are regarded as 'hard hats' rather than 'safety helmets'.
EVA foam is a soft maluable foam. It's super comfortable, really low profile to stop you looking like a lollypop with your helmet on and is multi-impact, so you can knock your head again and again without needing to replace the helmet! It doesn't offer as much protection as some other construction methods, but for a leightweight, lowprofile multi-impact lid, it's pretty damn good!
