Gender

• Unisex or Male8
  Male snowboards can be ridden by women too - so have unisex appeal. Girls need to keep an eye on the width of the board - to make sure it is not too wide for their boots size. Most girls will want to choose a unisex board with a soft flex because, compared with men of the same height, women tend to be lighter. Freestyle and beginner snowboards have soft flex characteristics.

  Female specific snowboards tend to be narrower because women have smaller feet. They also tend to be slightly 'softer' and more flexible' because women tend to be lighter. Some may have pretty colours and flowery graphics but the graphics can also be aggressively feminist or completely neutral too.

Ability Level  

If you are a complete beginner, there is absolutely no point in buying a snowboard that is intended for advanced riders, it will actually hinder you instead of help you progress. Choose the ability level closest to what you are now and be honest with yourself! This way you can find a board that will catapult you to that next ability level in no time.

  We do not sell dedicated beginner's snowboards because most riders will quickly outgrow one of these! Instead, all the beginner / intermediate snowboards listed on our website have been selected because they are suitable for taking most riders from beginner right through to intermediate level.

  These snowboards are for people who are confident, comfortable and relaxed on their snowboard and are looking to either specialise in a particular riding style or to maximise their all mountain performance. To achieve the increased performance, these boards are loaded with technical features which most beginners would either never notice and therefore never benefit from or which might make it more difficult for them to quickly learn to to ride.

  Rails and man made obstacles are your playground. You need a short, flexible, twin tip board with soft edges for sliding, jibbing and hitting boxes.
• Park / Pipe6
  Spins, grabs and kickers are your thing. You'd rather spin 5 than carve hard turns into the piste!
• All Mountain11
  You want to ride the whole mountain in style, switching from piste to park to powder with ease. Air off a few kickers, occasionally riding switch and at speed whenever you can.

  Cruising the pistes and powder, covering the entire resort as quickly as you can. Cutting sharp edges into the piste, then blasting off into the powder at every opportunity, dropping cliffs if you dare but speed rather than air is your thing.

• Boarder Cross-
  Specialist snowboards designed for racing over the rough and tumble of a boarder cross course. These boards can handle any terrain and can therefore be ridden all mountain but they are not for all riders! They are designed for speed so are very stiff and unforgiving, requiring a advanced level riding skills
• Alpine-
  Alpine or carving snowboards, for on-piste racing. Highly specialised snowboards, for advanced riders only. Alpine boards tend to be very narrow, very long and very stiff, with a big side cut radius. Riders wear hard boots.

Your Boot Size  

Ensure your snowboard is the correct width for your boots. If a snowboard is too narrow, your toes or heels may drag and catch on the snow - causing you to fall. If a snowboard is too wide, you will find it difficult to transition between turns. It is not a precise science; riders with a wide stance and open angles can ride much narrower boards but stick to this guide and you will not go far wrong!

Year  

Snowboard design and performance evolve with time. Most manufacturers launch new models and new design features or technical specifications every year. Others simply change the colours or the graphic designs. When we quote a year for a snowboard it always refers to the second half of a season. So, if you see a 2015 snowboard, it will be referring to a snowboard launched for the 2014 / 2015 winter season.

Length  

It is important to choose a snowboard which is not too short and not too long for your body weight, for your riding style and for your ability level. A board which is too long will be difficult to turn and to control. A board which is too short will be slower and will not grip the snow and ice so well when you need it to. It will also sink more easily in powder.

Camber  

Camber profile is the curvature of the base a snowboard from the tip to the tail. Manufacturers are now producing many different camber profiles for different styles of riding. If you are into cruising around the pistes or pipe riding we recommend a traditional positive camber snowboard. For off piste and more hardcore freestyle riding there are now some alternatives to choose from.

• Positive1
  Positive camber offers the most power in a turn, energy transmission when riding hard and stability on landings over any other shape on the market. You also get superior pop to other shapes due to the Recoil properties of a positive camber. As Rome say, " Keep The king of Pop Alive!"
• Reverse5
  Sometimes referred to as 'negative profile' or 'banana shape', reverse camber is just as it sounds, a camber turned upside down. Basically the board bends up from the centre to tip and tail. Reverse camber offers a more skate like feel on freestyle or jib specific boards and superior float when riding deep powder. This profile is also good for beginners because it makes it more difficult to catch an edge and much easier to turn and manoeuvre the snowboard. .
• Zero1
  A flat camber (zero or flatliner) profile is usually found on more freestyle orientated snowboards. The profile is completely flat from the contact points at the tip and tail and all the way through the middle section of the board. This gives you a loose, catch free feel when in the park, without too much loss of pop or edge control. The only curved sections are the tip and tail.
• Hybrid9
  A hybrid camber combines several camber profiles into a single snowboard. The aim is to give you the best of all worlds and, for the most part, manufacturers have absolutely achieved this objective. Perhaps the most common hybrid profile is to have reverse camber between the bindings and positive camber from the bindings to the contact points. This delivers a loose and catch free feel at slow speeds but gives you a stable controlled ride at high speeds or when landing off jumps.
• 3D-
  AKA Triple Base Technology (TBT), No Hang Ups, Dow Tech or Wings - 3d bases make snowboarding easier by raising your contact points at the boards edges to create a catch free feel that still edges hard when you want it. Some of these bases also feature a bowl shape at the nose or tail to help turn the board easier

Shape

• Twin Tip8
  A twin tip snowboard has an identical shape at the nose and tail of the board. This makes them easy to ride switch or regular and are perfect for freestyle snowboarding. An excellent choice for your first snowboard to encourage you to ride in both directions.
• Directional Twin3
  Designed to be ridden both switch and regular, these boards have a twin tip shape at the nose and tail but the side cut shape and the board's flex pattern are directional. This makes all mountain cruising easier but the board retains it's freestyle feel and playfulness. Perfect for all mountain and freestyle / park riders.
• Directional 1
  Directional snowboards are designed to ride in one direction most of the time as they generally feature a set back stance and a directional side cut / flex pattern. These boards still ride absolutely fine in both directions so switch landings are not a problem. If you want an all mountain / big mountain charger that can still ride the park then these are the way to go.

Base  

The base of a snowboard comes in 4 different constructions. You may see different grades or names used from each brand, however each one will fall into one of the four categories below.

• Sintered Hybrid-
  Sintered hybrid bases are the most expensive bases on the market. These bases are manufactured in the exact same way as Sintered bases, however the polythene granules are mixed with carbon or other friction reducing properties to create bases that are lightning fast and super durable.
• Sintered8
  Sintered bases represent the premium end of snowboard and ski construction. Granules of polythene are ground to powder, then heated and compressed onto your core. A sintered base is much more durable, faster and hold wax much more efficiently giving you a faster ride! Unfortunately you do pay more for this type of construction but its well worth it.
• Extruded Hybrid-
  AKA Sintruded, Extrintered, Impact and the list goes on. These bases use the same construction as an Extruded base, however the p-tex plastic is generally much higher grade or infused with another chemical to make it harder or more durable.
• Extruded4
  An extruded base is constructed from a single sheet of p-tex plastic and then forced through a mould in the shape of your snowboard or skis, thus creating a single sheet of plastic which is then glued to the core of your board. Extruded bases are extremely easy to maintain if you decided to tear yourself a new hole, which is why they are generally found on entry/intermediate level boards and rail specific boards.

Special Features

• ECO Construction-
  ECO boards are friendly to the environment by using a variety of construction methods which minimise their carbon footprint. Natural fibers are used extensively through these boards design and often create a more durable product that out performs other traditional techniques.
• Structurn-
  Structurn snowboard bases feature tiny almost pin prick sized dimples designed to break down the surface tension and friction between your snowboard and the snow. This allows your snowboard to go faster - rather like a golf ball flies further due the dimples on it's surface. You really notice the benefit when trying to hold your speed over flat spots and shallow gradients.
• Flat Kicks-
  AKA, skate kicks or radius to flat. These boards feature an abbrupt nose and tail to allow the snow to be dispursed evenly in powder. This is a great feature for snowboarders who are looking for a freestyle orientated snowboard that will still perform extremely well in the powder.
• Downsizeable-
  These boards include an extended effective edge, which means you can downsize a few cm's from the usual size you ride. For example, if you are usually on a 160cm board, you will find that a 158cm board with an extended effective edge will feel like a 160cm, but will have the added advantage of reduced swing weight and more manouverability.
• Magnetraction-
  Magnetraction is the name given to the wave pattern you get on some snowboard edges. It is a useful feature on reverse camber snowboards because it gives them more grip, bite and edge control. Without magnetraction some reverse camber snowboards would be difficult to ride because it is the magnetraction which enables their edges to really engage with the snow.
  
  Magnetraction edges have strategically located and sized ridges along each side of the snowboard. The biggest ridges are between your feet where your balance is centred, adding maximum control and power where you need it most. The ridges outside your feet are smaller and less aggressive, providing tip and tail control, while maintaining freestyle freedom. Another neat feature of Magnetraction is the fact that you can run your edges de-tuned, but still have loads of grip - this makes hitting boxes and rails much easier!
• Lightweight-
  These boards have been classified as lightweight after our team tested these boards and believe they feel featherweight underfoot. Lightweight boards are extremely easy to control and have an increased feeling of pop when when you need it.
• Hand Made-
  Few and far between. Hand made snowboards are the very top end of the market and offer some of the finest produced decks available. These boards tend to come with a longer warranty and use the very finest materials. Unfortunately you do pay more for these boards but the results are well worth it.

Condition

• Brand New12
  Nothing wrong with these babies! Most still have the manufacturer's cling film wrapped around them!
• Factory 2nd-
  A factory second is when there is a small cosmetic imperfection after manufacture. There may be a small scratch on the top sheet or a mark on the base. The imperfections vary from board to board but are invariably cosmetic and will not detract from the snowboards performance or warranty. These boards are worth a look because they are cheaper! 2nds have not been used as demo and have not been on display.
• Ex Display-
  These boards are brand new and completely unused. They have, however, been on display in a showroom - so may come with minor marks and scuffs on them. Some may have had bindings mounted on them.
• Ex Demo-
  These boards have been used, but not very much! Most come to us direct from the manufacturer's or importer's test teams. They tend to be the latest models in superb condition, offering outstanding value for money.
