Ski (40)

Includes padded compartments to protect your camera and camera accessories (or other technical equipment) from wet weather and impact.

Frame Type  

The back panel is perhaps the most important part of a back pack because it is the part which comes into contact with your back so, for sporting usage, heavy loads and long periods of use, needs to be comforatble.

No Frame, No Padding (29)  

Fine for small packs, packs not used for action sports, packs not on your back for long periods of time or for packs not used for bulky loads.

Padding Only (55)  

Most packs tend to have a comfortable layer of foam padding on the back panel, to prevent pack contents digging into your back and to insulate your pack contents from the heat of your back.

Integrated Frame (13)  

Modern hi tech packs come with integrated frames (as well as foam padding) to ensure the pack sits comforatbly on your back and carries the load in a stable, well balanced manner. The bigger the pack, the heavier the load, the more time it is on your back and the more extrem your sporting activity, the more important a good frame becomes.

Access

Back Panel (9)  

Access to the main compartment through the back panel of the pack. Swing the pack round to your chest, with the waist strap is still attached, for easy access the contents. Ideal for rock climbers or anyone who does not want to risk dropping their pack whilst accessing the contents.

Top Loading (4)  

Traditional access to the main compartment via the top of the bag - minimising the risk of items falling out whilst you are rummaging around.

Front (79)  

Access to the main compartment via the front of the bag. Easy access so you do not need to take everything out to find something at the bottom of your pack.

Straps

Both waist and chest straps to keep your backpack upright and secure

Waist Band Strap (9)  

Straps around the waist to keep your bag upright - especially useful for action sports. On the best packs, these straps are designed to take a lot of the weight off your shoulders, transferring it through your hips instead - making the pack much more comforatble to carry.

Chest Strap (5)  

Chest strap, connecting the two shoulder straps across your chest; helps to keep your bag in a comforatble position and stops the shoulder straps slipping off your shoulders.

Special Features  

Specialist features for specialist uses. Some of the features listed here are included with ski, snowboard and mountaineering packs designed for when you venture off piste into the backcountry where there may be a risk of avalanche.

Waterproof Pocket (28)  

Waterproof pocket(s), perfect for cameras, MP3 players, iPod's and phones

Back Protector (4)  

Reinforced spine and back protection built in to the back of the bag. Protects you and your gear.

Air Bag (1)  

A floatation device for bringing you and your pack closer to the surface of an avalanche should you get caught. The closer to the surface, the more likley it is that you will be found quickly, escape quickly and therefore survive.
