Ski and Snowboard socks can come in different shapes and types depending on the needs of the user.
Ergonomically designed socks come with an anatomically shaped foot section and are articulated at the ankle. They are much, much more comfortable than tube socks - which are only recommended for those on a very tight budget. Wearing properly shaped snowboard or ski socks makes a massive difference to your comfort and therefore to your riding/skiing performance, and your pleasure.
- Tube socks
Good for either snowboarding or skiing, tube socks do not have a sculptured shape to the foot so will quickly adapt to fit almost any foot size. As the name implies, they are a straight tube. Tube socks are, however, less comfortable than shaped snowboard or ski socks and can bunch up inside your boots, causing discomfort or even blisters. They are a cheap alternative, good for those on a tight budget.
- Novelty/Fun Socks
Have fun whilst snowboarding or skiing with our novelty ski tube socks featuring cartoon characters for children or adults. Kids love novelty ski socks, so they're a great christmas stocking filler too!
Some socks are ski specific, some are snowboard specific, whilst others are good for either sport.
- Snowboard Specific
Socks designed specifically for snowboarding, with padding and extra support in the areas most needed. Most (but not all) snowboard specific socks have extra padding in the calf area to protect you from the pressure generated by pressing your calf into your binding high back.
- Ski Specific
Ski specific socks are designed with skiing in mind. Most (but not all) have extra padding in the shin area to help alleviate the pressure caused by bending your knees and driving your weight into the front tongue area of your boots.
- Dual Snow Sports
Good all round socks, suitable for either snowboarding or skiing.
Some manufacturers label their socks as either male or female specific. We honestly have no idea why because, apart from the size and the colours, we have not been able to identify any technical differences.
- Male / Unisex
Masculine colours and larger sizes are what set these socks apart. Women can wear male specific socks, no problem. Just make sure you like the colours and pick the right size because there is no discernible technical difference between male and female socks.
Girlie colours and smaller sizes are what set these socks apart. Men can wear female specific socks, no problem. Just make sure you like the colours and pick the right size because there is no discernible technical difference between male and female socks.
Children's ski and snowboard socks tend to be a bit smaller and may not have quite so many technical features.
The materials used in skiing/snowboarding socks can greatly change how they feel, how warm they are and how well they deal with moisture.
This could include other natural materials, such as silk or bamboo.
Socks made of synthetic materials, can have many different properties. Synthetic materials are often blended together to give more desirable results. This category might include Acrylic, Nylon, Polyester.. etc
Whilst warm, wool can be bulky and lack shape.
- Merino/Other blend
Socks are often made up of multiple materials, many companies will blend Merino with materials such as acrylic, to give additional qualities.
- Merino Wool
Merino wool is a very soft, warm and breathable material. This wool is often used in higher end socks, to give warmth and comfort, yet still maintain the shape and performance of the sock.
Fabric weight relates to the thickness of the socks. Thinner socks are better for performance whereas thicker socks are generally better for comfort.
Lightweight socks are some of the thinnest available. These are ideal for people who want a performance sock or ski early or late season when the weather is warmer.
Midweight socks are the most popular socks available. They offer a good balance between performance and comfort.
Heavyweight socks are the thickest socks available. They offer maximum comfort and warmth.
Many ski and snowboard socks will have some kind of padding/ support in place to make them more comfortable when used for riding.
A cushioned sock will provide warmth and comfort
- Key areas
Higher end socks will often increase padding where it is needed most, to reduce pressure points, and minimise the effect of impacts/landings/ bumps in terrain. This is often a feature seen in ergonomically designed socks.
These will have more padding and will often be warmer due to the thicker material.
- Low profile
These socks tend to have less padding to give a closer fit. However if a technical construction has been used they can be shaped to give good support.
Ski and Snowboard socks come in different styles to suit different users needs. Higher end socks tend to focus more on performance, whilst other socks can be suited to beginners and focus more on comfort and warmth than technical features.
Beginners socks tend to focus purely on comfort, durability, warmth and value. They will be less shaped than higher end socks, but often perfect for the needs of those just starting out.
- All users
These socks offer both performance and comfort, and as a result they are often suitable for beginners through to experts.
Performance socks will be shaped, and use technical materials and construction to give maximum control of the boot and the board/skis.
