Often imitated but never duplicated, the Alien Classic is the original flexible shaft rock climbing cam.
Developed in a Colorado garage by mountaineering enthusiast Dave Waggoner back in the 1980's, the Alien Classic cam revolutionised climbing cam construction. These micro-cams with narrow heads and flexible stems could perform in a way that no other friction anchor at the time could, and could fit into spots where no other cam could get to. This cam changed the way challenging climbs were tackled and opened up new terrain and climbing routes which were previously considered impossible.
The Alien Classic uses a simple internal spring and sheath trigger system, with improved trigger wires which add strength and maintain a smooth independent lobe motion. The lobes themselves are CNC machined from 6061-T6 aluminium alloy and are textured for incredible holding power. The stem is made from one length of tough yet flexible 7x19 stainless steel wire and it is this material which grants this cam it's famous flexibility and versatility. This straight forward, uncomplicated design is what continues to make the Alien Classic such an effective climbing cam.
Waggoner's original design was so good, in fact, that when Alien was bought by Fixe and relaunched in 2011, it's new owners decided not to change the design, but simply updated it to meet modern safety standards. The Alien Classic, therefore, is manufactured with the same machines, materials and following the guidelines of it's creator, and is still considered to be the original, lightest and best thin crack protection climbing cam.
