The Wailer series is DPS's most popular selection of skis, using three different shapes all designed to be versatile and playful with an emphasis on performance. This model of the 2019 Wailer 106 uses the Foundation construction, which consolidates all of the top end build quality and high performance shaping associated with DPS into a package that's a little easier to ski and uses more affordable materials, ultimately making for a more accessible ski.
With it's 106mm waist, this ski definitely sits at the wider end of all mountain skis. On groomed pistes the ski will lay over easily and the 18 meter radius is more than capable of forming the ski into smooth carving shapes, with the camber of the profile rebounding the skier from one turn to the next. On other firm conditions such as re-frozen snow off piste, the ski still performs well because its sidewall construction and triaxial fibreglass laminates allow the ski's edges to grip well and for the ski to retain it's shape for smooth, stable and consistent carving performance.
There's a considerable rocker in the skis tip, and a more subtle rocker at the tail. This profile allows the ski to broken loose and skied in a more playful, agile way when necessary, as well as improving the skis ability to float, pivot and plane in powder conditions. The tips of the ski use a slight tapered shape too. This involves pushing the widest point of the ski slightly back away from the tip, and by using only a slight taper it allows the ski to utilise almost it's full edge to grip snow while also reducing some of the hooking and drag effects that soft snow conditions can cause to more traditionally shaped ski tips.
Stability is a key attribute to the Wailer 106 Foundation. The sidewall construction acts like suspension in absorbing vibrations, and combines with the camber profile and fibreglass laminates to ensure that this ski can remain damp and confidence inspiring when pushed through variable and unpredictable conditions ranging from re-frozen chop to late season slush. Additionally, a dual band of carbon fiber above and below the wood core further dampens the ski and adds longevity to the skis firm flex. All of this is built around an impressively light weight bamboo and poplar core which still retains the predictable qualities you would expect from a high end, full wood core ski.
Skier's looking for a more accessible way to get the worlds most high-tech skis on their feet, and who need top-end performance both on and off piste, should certainly take a look at the 2019 Wailer 106 Foundation from DPS Skis.
Bi-Phase Bamboo and Poplar Core - The combination of Lightweight layered poplar and bamboo provides the perfect balance for a super-lightweight ski with no compromise on power, rebound and response
Triaxial Fibreglass - Fibreglass weave surrounding the core boosts torsional rigidity and keeps the ski stable through the turn
Full UHMW Sidewall - Promotes power transmission to the skis edge for improved grip and absorbs vibrations for smooth skiing
Uni Directional Carbon - Carbon fibre bands running the length of the ski above and below the core help to dampen the ski and maintain the lively flex pattern
