The Fenix 5 from Garmin sets the industry standard for an outdoor smartwatch. Built for athletes, adventurers and explorers, the Fenix 5 tracks you and your performance while looking sleek enough for a commute through the city.
Abstaining from the cultural norm of the touchscreen generation Garmin opted for a button interface for the Fenix 5. A sensible choice for use in wet conditions where touch screens are compromised and impractical for use with gloved or sweaty hands. Designed in order to cope with any outdoor venture, the Fenix 5 is water resistant to 100m with a rugged exterior.
A high resolution 218 x 218px, 27.94mm diameter colour display reduces the effect of sun glare ensuring you can view your device regardless of conditions. The Garmin Chroma Display uses transflective technology that reflects and transmits light in conjunction with one another. This allows the high resolution colour display to be easily viewed under intense sunlight.
All Fenix 5 models feature Garmin’s Elevate wrist heart rate technology; an optical wrist sensor allows you to monitor heart rate without the need for a traditional chest strap. It allows for 24/7 monitoring, thus allowing for a quantitative measurement of calories burned day to day.
Designed to enable the user to be their own personal trainer, the Fenix 5 Performance Widget provides fitness information to tailor workouts for personal goals. The Performance widgit features the following displays that accurately provide training information:
Training Status, calculates and customises workout regimes to improve progress. VO2Max Estimator provides an estimate for the maximum volume of O2 consumed per minute, thus giving an indication of overall fitness. Training Load supplies data for how hard a user has trained over a period of time regardless of the activity. Recovery Advisor is a clock that recommends the amount of time required since the last workout for recovery. Additional indicators such as Functional Threshold Power (FTP) & Lactate Threshold delivers information that you can use to judge your actual performance level. Training Effect 2.0 provides aerobic and anaerobic scores after each training session.
The Fenix 5 is the fitness smartwatch. Dedicated profiles for tracking your progress regardless of the activity include: cycle, run, swim, golf and paddle sports to name a few. An additional multi-sport function allows the user to change effortlessly from one activity to the next to validate all training splits from duathlons to iron-mans.
To guide you off the beaten path the Fenix range from Garmin uses both traditional GPS in conjunction with GLONASS satellites. GLONASS was developed by the Russian federation, composed of 24 operational satellites to accurately position your device. Due to the positioning of the GLONASS constellations it has improved precision at high latitudes, both north and south. The Fenix 5 line is capable of tracking both GPS and GLONASS satellites simultaneously, allowing for improved global accuracy.
Advanced sensors enhance environmental and locational information, including Garmin TracBack that allows users to return along a traveled path created on an electronic breadcrumb trail in event of an emergency. Elevation data is calculated from a barometric altimeter that monitors ascent and descent. Additionally, the measurement of air pressure can be combined with the internal thermometer for temperature allowing one to predict changing weather conditions.
For aesthetic customizability the Fenix 5 range can fit a selection of Garmin’s QuickFit bands. They come in a range of styles: premium leather, metal or silicone to name a few (these can be purchased separately).
The Fenix 5 series are capable of supporting smart notifications to keep you connected with a paired compatible device.
