The Slap 104 is the narrowest adults ski in the 18/19 freeride powder collection from the premium Chamonix based ski brand ZAG. It is the ultimate all mountain freeride ski, a ski with playful freeride roots that is narrow enough to carve comfortably but wide enough to float well in powder.
Skiing in powder is made as easy as possible by the twin rocker profile and it's surfy feel, as well as plenty of float which could make this an ideal ski for first-time powder riders. This range of skis features early taper in the tip and tail, whereby the 2 widest points have been moved closer to the centre of the ski. The benefit of this is that you get a reduced swing weight and shorter contact points, so the ease of turning is improved for a playful and nimble experience, as well as reduced drag in powder.
A lightweight paulownia and poplar wood core combine the benefits of a lightweight and lively wood in the centre and the outsides whilst a denser and more powerful wood runs immediately either side of the centre. A common problem of skis that feature long tip and tail rocker is that they suffer from instability and chatter, Zag have countered this problem through a Kevlar insert between the woodcore and the base of the ski, so the vibrations are absorbed before they reach you. All of this is done without sacrificing any of the pop and life that you get from such a light wood core, something that can happen with denser and heavier stabilising materials.
Zag Skis have been around since 2002, currently based in Chamonix they are able to regularly test and develop their products, ensuring every product is the best it possibly can be. As a relatively small company whose products are all designed and tested in the mountains you can be assured of supreme quality in this innovative and exclusive brand.
While the S-104 is certainly no park ski, what it does is bring some of that maneuverable and free-flowing freestyle personality into a ski that's still more than capable of getting serious when it needs to. The twin rocker makes it easy to shut down on steeps or for fast changes in direction when you spot a sidehit or natural feature you want to air off. When you do, the light construction makes it easy to control in the air and the medium flexing tail offers plenty of support on landings. The way the flex pattern starts soft in the tip then quickly firms up towards the ski's centre makes it perfect for loading the tips up for big lines at high speeds on steep slopes through soft and variable snow, and there's still plenty of bite underfoot for carving trenches down your favourite pistes. If you're an all-mountain skier who wants to be able to tackle serious freeride terrain but make sure you're always having fun doing it, ZAG's S-104 is a perfect ski for any day.
