Founded in 1949, Emanuel Goldberg drew from a background in the sciences to develop lightweight, shatterproof plastic containers for laboratory use. In 1960 a group of Labware scientists, who happened to be avid outdoor enthusiasts, realised the bottles were great for travel as they were leak-proof, shatterproof and above all lightweight. This started a trend of people moving away from disposable cans and glass and using refillable plastic bottles. With a few tweaks here and there, in 1970 Nalgene Outdoor was born.
