Gore-tex is the original and many say still the best waterproof, windproof and breathable ePE membrane for outdoor clothing and footwear. Gore-tex is not a fabric, rather it is a membrane applied to the inside surface of Gore-Tex approved fabrics during the manufacturing process. This ePE membrane has billions of pores which are too small to allow liquid to pass through (unless under extreme pressure) but large enough to allow moisture vapor to pass. The Gore-Tex membrane is usually sandwiched between a durable outer layer fabric and an inner lining.
