Both provide support and protection for your ankles but mountaineering boots tend to come higher up your leg and have much stiffer uppers and much stiffer soles so can be more difficult to walk in. The big advantages of mountaineering boots are the stability they provide whilst carrying heavy loads and their ability to “edge” while climbing steeper slopes. Most mountaineering boots support automatic or semi-automatic crampons for ice travel and are built to withstand the cold, often being double-layered (with an inner liner and outer shell) for warmth in sub-zero temps.
