There are three main types of rooftop tent - softshell, hardshell and hybrid. Softshell rooftop tents are the lightest and most affordable and they fold out to provide the largest sleeping areas. Softshells do, however, take a bit longer to set up and their fabric walls are less durable in extreme weather. Hardshell rooftop tents pop open in seconds and often come with built in storage for bedding and other gear. The hardshell is more aerodynamic on your roof but hardshells are quite heavy (requiring a strong roof rack), tend to be smaller inside and can be significantly more expensive. His is where hybrid rooftop tents come in and aim to give you the best of both worlds.
