Montane Jackets, Fleeces & T-shirts

Measuring your chest size is an adequate way to determine what size garment you should be looking for. This applies to jackets, base layers, mid-layers and any other tops. Please see below what size is specific to you suggested by Montane.

Montane Fit Guide

Montane tailor the fit of their products depending on the activity they are designed for. Many of their jackets come in a number of different 'fits', so be sure to check the product description on the item to see which fit applies.

Montane's fit categories take into account layering systems. So when layering one Montane product with another, you should use clothing from the same fit category. For example, a medium-sized Active Mountain Fit base layer is best layered alongside a medium-sized Active Mountain Fit mid layer.

  • Classic Mountain: This is a relaxed fit, designed for mountain walking and mountaineering. Outer layers are cut larger to allow more room for layering underneath.

  • Active Mountain: Provides close-fitting support and comfort during fast-paced mountain activities and ideal for when layering with other garments.

  • Mountain Run: Form-fitting garments that contour the shape of your body for a more streamlined shape, perfect for mountain running.

In Our Opinion:

Montane ski & snowboard jackets, sportswear and tops tend to fit very closely to the size chart above, so for a good fit, please go by these measurements. If you want a baggy look and feel, go for a size larger or a different fit. We are confident in the fit of these garments because:

  • We have tried the jackets on ourselves, in a full range of models and sizes.
  • We monitor customer returns.
  • We see customers wearing the jackets in our Snowboard/Ski Shop
  • We have been selling them for years!

When trying on garments, please allow for:

  • The wearing of mid and / or base layers beneath the jacket
  • The freedom of movement required for skiing, snowboarding and other outdoor activities
  • The cut and style of the jacket
  • The insulation which may or may not be included in a particular jacket

All of the above will differ depending on a jacket's specific design. A jacket's physical dimensions will always be significantly greater than your actual chest measurement but this difference will also vary from jacket to jacket. We strongly recommend that you never measure a jacket to determine the chest size you need.

How to Measure Yourself

Howtomeasureyourself

  •  • Wear just an undergarment or nothing at all.
  •  • Stand up straight with your arms hanging by your sides
  •  • Breath normally and run a soft tape measure under your arm pits over the largest part of your chest and across your shoulder blades.
  •  • The tape measure should be snug, but not tight.
  •  • For your inseam, make sure you measure from the floor up.

Montane Trousers & Shorts

In order to determine the correct trouser and shorts size, you need to consider a few different measurements for men and women. These apply to all outdoor trousers, ski and snowboard pants and any item worn on the bottom half of your body.

The waistband size, as physically measured on a pair of pants, will rarely be the same as that quoted by the manufacturer because the manufacturer quotes the waist measurement of the person the pants are designed to fit and the waistband rarely aligns with a person's natural waist line.

If a manufacturer quotes a 34" waist, the pants should fit you if you have a 34 inch waist but the waist band on the pants, depending on the cut of the pants, may not actually be 34 inches. Please be aware of waist adjusters and built-in belts. If you decide to wear impact shorts, you might need to go up a size to make sure they fit under your trousers.

When you measure the inseam on a pair of snowboard or ski pants, it should be similar to your own inside leg measurement but people often wear snowboard or ski pants with shorter inseams than their inside leg measurement or their normal fashion trousers because:

1.  Snowboard and ski boots are bulky and rise up your leg a fair way.

2.  It's the fashion to wear your pants with the crotch low down towards your knees so, if you are one of these people, the inside leg measurement makes precious little difference.

3.  People also wear pants with extra long legs if they like the bunched up look.

Montane Fit Guide

Montane hiking, climbing and outdoor pants come in various 'fits'. Check the product description on each of the pants to see which fit applies.

  • Classic Fit: This is a standard fit, designed to provide space for layering whilst maintaining a stylish look
  • Slim Fit: Provides close-fitting support and comfort when undertaking physical activities, contouring to the shape of your body without reducing freedom of movement.
  • Mountain Run: Form-fitting garments that contour the shape of your body for a more streamlined shape, perfect for mountain running.

Wrist Guards?

If you plan on wearing wrist guards under your standard gloves, then you will need to go for one size larger than you measure up to, in order for the wrist guard to fit comfortably under the glove

If the gloves you are looking to purchase include an integrated wrist guard, the Montane will adjust the size of the glove accordingly to accommodate this. Please use the size chart above to determine the correct size for you.

How to measure your head

Measure around your head using a soft tape measure. Ensure the tape passes across the centre of the forehead, above the ears and over the natural bump at the back of the head. Allow 1cm extra for long or thick hair, or if you intend to wear a beanie or balaclava under the helmet.

If you are at the top end of any of the sizes, we advise going for the larger size to accommodate different head shapes. If your head is exactly the same circumference as the helmet, because your head is unlikely to be the exact shape of the helmet it's unlikely to fit perfectly so a larger size will fit better. There is no substitute for coming into store to try on a helmet!

Our store location can be found HERE. If you are unable to make it to our store to try on a helmet we suggest buying two different sizes and returning whichever size does not fit. Our returns policy can be found HERE.

Montane Backpacks

Backpacks can come in various shapes, sizes and volumes. To find your perfect backpack size, it's best to measure the length of your back and this, in turn, will bring you longer lasting comfort. The size of your backpack is important for your safety and that's why many Montanes have developed backpacks in different sizes for different back lengths. The actual volume of the bag stays the same but the design has been adapted for different back lengths.

Montane sell a variety of packs. Please use the guides and charts below to find the most suitable size pack for you.
