A splitboard is a highly specilised snowboard designed for backcountry touring and hiking uphill, often in deep powder snow, beyond the reach of chairlifts. The board quite literally splits into two, making two short fat skis for uphill hiking with or without the use of skins. The two halves simply clamp together.
