The walk mode system allows the upper and lower sections of the ski boot shell to articulate separately, enabling your ankle to bend so you can walk more freely. Walk mode is fairly standard on touring ski boots but is increasingly also available on regular alpine ski boots. There is usually a switch at the back which, when flipped up, activates walk mode.
