The Absolute Guide to Smith Snowboard/Ski Goggle Technology

Ventilation

Smith Airflow

This is a passive ventilation system which features fixed vents in the brow of the goggle and the front of the lens to increase the circulation of air. A semi-porous filter is placed behind the vents to prevent snow and moisture from entering the goggles which could lead to increased fogging. These lenses are dual layer and are bonded together with spacer foam to create a thermal barrier. In a thermal barrier the external lens keeps the internal lens warm, dry and above the dew point (the temperature at which water vapour in the arm condenses). Because the dew point varies with altitude, temperature and pressure the lens must be able to breathe. Because this system is a passive ventilation system it requires air to be moving over frame to work efficiently and effectively.Smith Airflow

Smith Regulator

This is an adjustable ventilation system which features vents in the brow of the goggle and on the front of the lens which can be opened or closed to alter the circulation of air. These vents are larger than on Smith Airflow goggles and are designed to be opened when you're not moving such as sitting on a chairlift and then closed partially or fully when riding. You can of course leave the vents open or closed the whole time, depending on the weather. There is also a semi-porous filter placed behind the vents to prevent snow and moisture from entering the goggles which could lead to increased fogging. These lenses are dual layer and are bonded together with spacer foam to create a thermal barrier. In a thermal barrier the external lens keeps the internal lens warm, dry and above the dew point (the temperature at which water vapour in the arm condenses). Smith Vaporator

Used on Smith frameless or semi-frameless goggles like the I/O7, I/O, I/OS, I/OX, Vice and Virtue. Because of this the lenses themselves are not vented, instead the ventilation is built into the brow of the frame. These lenses are dual layer and are bonded together with Smith's Vaporator material (similar to silicone) to create a thermal barrier. In a thermal barrier the external lens keeps the internal lens warm, dry and above the dew point (the temperature at which water vapour in the arm condenses). Because the dew point varies with altitude, temperature and pressure the lens must be able to breathe. This is achieved by putting Smith's patented Porex filter into the lens. Smith Turbo Fan

On Smith's Turbo Fan series a micro electronic fan actively encourages the flow of air. The fan is placed in the brow of the goggle frame and draws air out of the frame. This draws air into the frame through channels and vents in the sides. Normally a goggle needs airflow over the frame to keep it moisture and fog free. Turbo Fan is great as it ensures this happens even when you're standing still. All Smith Turbo Fans have two speed settings. The lower setting is great for most conditions with the higher setting ideal for more extreme conditions.Smith Turbo Fan

Anti Fog

Fog-X

Fog-X is a hydrophilic chemical treatment that creates a micro-etched surface on the inner lens. This dissipates moisture before fog can form. Because Fog-X is a chemical treatment that is 'burned' into the inner surface of the lens is cannot be wiped off like other anti-fog treatments can.

5X Anti-Fog

5X is the world's most advanced anti-fog lens treatment. It works on a similar principle to Smith's Fog-X by using a chemical treatment to micro-etch the surface of the lens. Because 5X is a chemical treatment that is 'burned' into the inner surface of the lens is cannot be wiped off like other anti-fog treatments can. In testing it has been shown normal lenses fog after 30-50 seconds whereas 5X treated lenses withstood fogging for more than 120 seconds.Smith 5X

Face Foam

Single Layer

This is the most basic level of face foam offered by Smith. It is a plush layer of foam that creates a comfortable seal against the face and absorbs sweat and moisture to reduce fogging.

Dual Layer

Plush foam provides a comfortable layer that seals out the elements and absorbs sweat and moisture to reduce fogging. It also has a fleece lining to improve comfort and create a more secure seal to keep out the elements.

Triple Layer

A higher density base layer of foam reduces hot spots helping to form a tighter seal on the face. The mid layer foam is the same as found on Smith's single and dual layer face foam models and is a plush comfortable layer which seals out the elements and absorbs sweat and moisture to reduce fogging. It also has a fleece lining to improve comfort and create a more secure seal to keep out the elements.

TLT - Tapered Lens Technology

When light passes through something it refracts or changes course. If left uncorrected this refraction can cause visual distortion and eye fatigue. Smith's Tapered Lens Technology straightens out the refracted incoming light by progressively tapering the lens from the optical centre toward the peripherals. This means what you see is 100% visually accurate with maximum comfort and minimal eye fatigue.

Polarized Optics

Glare can be a real eye killer out on the mountains. Snow and ice can cause large amounts of glare, especially in high sunlight. This glare can overload your retinas with too much information that they cannot process causing rapid eye fatigue and discomfort. Polarized lenses combat this by altering the way the light enters our eyes. Smith's polarized lenses balance efficiency, light transmission and lens tint to filter out visual noise and cut through haze. This allows your eyes to concentrate on surface features more easily so you can focus on riding. Polarized lenses are great for people with sensitive eyes. Polarized lenses also work well in bright and low light simultaneously, reducing the number of lens tints you need.

Photochromic Lenses

Smith work by the philosphy that 'In the mountains the only constant is change.'Smith therefore incorporate a photochromic inner behind their regular lens tints to adjust to changing conditions. This allows a lens which is typically designed for low light conditions to darken in bright sunlight meaning you only need one lens for any conditions. Photochromic lenses adjust to changes in UV which means they adjust even when moving from shade to sunlight or morning shadows to afternoon glare. The biggest problem with photochromic lenses is temperature. When the temperature drops the photochromic layer does not work as efficiently. Not with Smith lenses! Smith place their photochromic lens on the inside of the thermal lens which keeps it warm, dry and working perfectly.

Lens Change Systems

Sculpted Fit

Smith's Sculpted Fit system incorporates 4 pieces of design into their frames to offer the most comfortable fit available. A plush open-cell foam accommodates unique facial features, perfectly sealing out the elements and providing a comfortable fit. An increased density base layer reduces the likelihood of hot spots, helping to form the perfect fit against the face to seal out the elements. High-loft, brushed fleece provides exceptional comfort and insulation directly on the skin. A compression molded nose relieves pressure points allowing you to breathe comfortably without sacrificing the seal from the elements.

Goggle Outrigger

Goggle outriggers are designed to increase comfort, especially when worn with a helmet. Articulating outriggers evenly distribute pressure across the brow and nose of the frame to keep a tight seal against the elements. They also mean that the frame does not become distorted when worn over a helmet by allowing it to sink into the face port of the helmet.

Silicone Backed Strap

Smith place silicone beads on the back of their goggle straps to prevent them from sliding off whether you're wearing a helmet or not. These silisone beads with either be in a single line or 3 wavy lines.

Quick Clip

The Quick Clip allows you to put on and take off your goggles much more easily. Place the goggles onto your face then do the clip together behind your head. The Quick Clip is so easy that it can be used even with gloves on.
